In France, residential facilities for dependent older people (EHPAD) and autonomy residences (résidences autonomie) house vulnerable people who need continuous care. To keep them safe, these settings rely on nursing aides trained in emergency response, CPR and defibrillator use.

EHPAD (residential facility for dependent older people) and résidence autonomie; the frontline care worker is the nursing aide (aide-soignant), whose State Diploma (DEAS) is nationally regulated.

The first-aid requirement

AFGSU 2 (21h emergency care incl. CPR and AED) has been mandatory since the 21 April 2007 order and is a precondition for the State Nursing-Aide Diploma (DEAS); EHPAD staff must therefore be able to act without delay in a cardiac arrest.

A recognized, up-to-date first-aid certificate — with a mandatory refresher (MAC) every 4 years — is the way to meet this requirement; it is in addition to the staff's occupational training and must be renewed periodically.
