Your legal requirements in France
What the law actually requires where you are — summarized from our jurisdiction guides. Open any topic for the full details.
France's Labour Code (Part IV, Articles R4224-15 and R4224-16, transposing EU Framework Directive 89/391/EEC) requires at least one trained workplace first-aider (SST) in every workshop carrying out hazardous work and on every site of 20+ people running more than 15 days, with INRS benchmarking 10–15% of the workforce trained.
In France childminders must hold the PSC1 civic first-aid unit (about 7 hours) under the Social Action and Families Code art. D. 421-46 and the order of 5 November 2018, a condition for renewing their approval (agrément); in group nurseries (EAJE) at least one first-aid-trained person must be present.
France imposes a legal duty to rescue: Criminal Code Art. 223-6 punishes failure to assist a person in danger with up to 5 years' imprisonment and a €75,000 fine, while Law No. 2020-840 of 3 July 2020 grants 'citizen rescuers' exemption from civil liability (except gross or intentional fault) and expressly covers AED use.
French nurses, registered with the Ordre National des Infirmiers (ONI), have a continuing professional development (DPC) obligation run by the ANDPC under the Code de la santé publique — a triennial requirement of at least two different types of action over three years — and an accredited CPR/AED, ACLS or PALS course registered with the ANDPC counts toward it.
In France's residential care settings (EHPAD and résidences autonomie), nursing aides must hold AFGSU 2 (21 hours of emergency care including CPR and AED), mandatory since the order of 21 April 2007 and a precondition for the State Nursing-Aide Diploma (DEAS), with a refresher (MAC) required every 4 years.
Becoming a family assistant (assistant familial) in France requires accreditation (agrément) from the departmental council and mandatory training under the Code de l'action sociale et des familles — a preparatory stage plus 240 hours leading to the State Diploma (DEAF) — which includes first-aid skills such as responding to anaphylaxis with an epinephrine auto-injector.
Online CPR and first aid training is recognized in France, with a 2-year certification; for SST the theory may be studied remotely while the practical skills assessment is still done in person, with a competency-maintenance update (MAC) every 24 months.
